How I learned to love running

I never considered myself an athlete, but I’ve always loved sports. By the time I was a college student, I’d limited my heart pumping activities to the occasional game of pick-up basketball. A more frequent activity was the a marathon sports-watching binge at the frat house. Over the course of several years, I found myself out of shape, and the not-so-proud owner of a herniated disc in my back which required surgery.  Fortunately for me my surgery was a success.  I was lucky on some level because I was able to alleviate my persistent pain. After my surgery, I realized that I needed to grow up, so I decided to do something that seemed radical at the time: I decided to start running...

The secret to unlocking your brand's potential

you ask ten marketers to define what “brand” means and how it applies to their company, I bet you’d get ten different answers. The concept of brand is an inherently subjective matter. In a world where information and products are becoming more easily accessible, a clearly articulated brand can be the only difference between being considered background noise vs. standing out from the crowd. In other words, developing your brand is fundamentally important to your business’ success.

What to do now that Rdio is shutting down

I'm heartbroken. Rdio, my favorite music app of all time is dying on the vine. Looks like it is time to find a way to port all of the music that I've saved over the past 5 years to another streaming music service. This post summarizes what I've found about when Rdio will shut down and how to save your music.

I Made My Desk

After a heavy "suggestion" by my fiancée to declutter our dining room/home office, I decided to upgrade my desk. My current setup is a little corporate for a home office, so it's time for a change.

After looking closely, I realized that my inspiration wasn't much more than some natural gas piping and a single piece of wood... How hard could that be to assemble?

Can't be more than an hour or two to assemble, right? (Wrong!)

7 Early Takeaways from Google Helpouts Launch

Google recently launched a welcome page for it's new 'Helpouts by Google' product. The tool is designed to help consumers and "experts" connect through paid online video. As this is Google's first public acknowledgement of Helpouts' existence, few details about how the tool will be positioned were available until now. Here is what I think is the most important information from Google's launch page:

Rdio takes on Pandora with New Stations Features

Rdio recently updated its 'Stations' tool, which is a clear shot across Pandora's & the rest of the streaming music industry's bow. Just like Apple's iRadio, Rdio is looking to improve by offering a passive listening experience similar to the one that made Pandora a consumer favorite. This is an important change, as the passive listening experience allows consumers to pick one song/station to start an ongoing stream of music.  Traditionally Rdio, Spotify & other all-you-can-eat subscriptions have asked listeners to continuously curate to listen keep the good tunes rolling. In other words, before this feature, you had to constantly select the song you wanted to hear.

I'll show you mine - iPhone Homescreen Edition

I'm a self-admitted Apple hardware junkie and long time iPhone sporter (Disclaimer: I am also an Apple stockholder, which was cooler two years ago than it is now). That said, I installed the beta version of iOS7 a few months ago and was able to clean up my apps. I also feel like a person's home screen says something about them, so with that in mind, welcome to the first installment of: I'll show you mine if you show me yours...

Complete List of Rock Band Guitar Tabs

Republishing a blog that got lost in my transfer from my Wordpress.org to .com blog. Since my roommate bought this game it has pretty much consumed my social life. While pathetic, Rock Band has inspired me to put together the list of guitar tabs from the game.

The Greatest Cube Trashing Ever

Early in my career, I worked for eBay -- a +13,000 person tech company.  While big companies can be latent with bureaucracy, there are also benefits that smaller companies always desire. It's not all about great brand recognition, seemingly unlimited resources. There's a great tradition of messing up someone else's cubicle on their birthday.

The group will consist of between 12 to 24 people, (1-2 mixes per month). In addition to mix distribution, depending on the level of interest in the group, the book club type thing is always an option. This means group members would get together, chat about the music, do a pot-luck, and most likely get a have a beverage or two.
